The White Bucket Project

Full wallets and empty pockets. And white buckets.

The idea is that one person has plenty or has more than enough, but at the same time somebody else just down the road or just down the church row is stuck under so much need they can't begin to see a way out. The first church of Jesus-followers wasn't OK with something like that—they shared their stuff with each other. "Everything in common" is what it says in Acts 2.

So on Sunday, May 31, 2009, during our Mars Hill Gatherings, there were a bunch of white buckets all around the stage. People who had money to spare were asked to put some in a bucket. People who didn't have enough money were asked to grab a heaping handful or two. It seemed like everybody needed to drop something in or take something out of a bucket—the lines in the aisles went on and on. The morning felt really good, kind of like "everything in common".

We're sticking with the white buckets at Mars Hill for a while, and they're around so that if you have enough money you can give some to people who don't. All contributions given to The White Bucket Project fund will be distributed to people in the West Michigan area who have need*.
