He lost his job. Baby #4 was born two months early, and the hospital bills were gigantic. They had substantial debt, a mortgage to pay, and six mouths
to feed. For husband and wife Kevin and Amanda, the math in everything said that with what they had, they'd never be able to make it through. But what
the math didn't figure in was the fact that [they] had a House Church.

His family was being deported. ...Swirling through [Freddy's] head while he slept were awful images of lying still and silent under the bed, praying the
knocks would cease. Nightmares of what life...would be like for him. Worries of a new school, a new home, a new reality far from Grand Rapids. Not
wanting to bother his mother with these fears, Freddy turned to [his mentor]...

Six years ago, the only way the local church had interacted with the Grand Rapids AIDS Walk had been to protest it. But six years ago, David...decided to
join in the Walk... What he had hoped was that maybe the messages being sent from within the greater Church community could change. What he hadn't
expected was that other things might change too.

Mike began to give to the church: ten percent, no more, no less. Well, sometimes less. ...Sometimes God's "cut" was placed to the side—because of
a great sale, for example—but Mike figured that surely God understood. The dollar amount was secondary to the fact that Mike was giving like
he should. That was the real point, wasn't it? But then Mike and his wife moved to Grand Rapids...
